Press release of the German Delegation of Gaza Freedom March Gaza Freedom March ends with a successful demonstration in front of the Israeli Embassy in Cairo

Cairo, January 2, 2010. On the last day of the Gaza Freedom March about 450 participants gathered just before one pm, dressed as tourists, in front of the Israeli Embassy. At exactly one pm, the they revealed themselves to be demonstrators. Chanting "Free Gaza!" and "Boycott Israel!" they stormed ahead with signs and banners towards the street in front of the Israeli Embassy.

Ute Lampe, a speaker of the German Delegation commented: "This protest was a significant concluding statement that it is Israel that bears the responsibility for creating and perpetuating the illegal blockade of Gaza."

The police were visibly surprised by the demonstration. In contrast to the demonstration on the previous day, almost 15 minutes passed before the police arrived and forced all of the demonstrators to the sidewalk. There were no major conflicts with the police, although this protest was illegal, just as all the protests of the previous days were illegal. Many of the police and passersby showed sympathy with the aims of the demonstrators, which was also perhaps the reason for the relative passivity of the authorities.

However, as in the previous days, the work of the press was severely constrained by the authorities.

Pressemitteilung der deutschen Delegation vom Gaza Freedom March Gaza Freedom March endete mit einer erfolgreichen Demonstration vor der israelischen Botschaft in Kairo

Kairo, 02. Januar 2010. Am letzten Tag des Gaza Freedom March haben sich rund 450 TeilnehmerInnen vor 13 Uhr, getarnt als gewöhnliche Touristen, in der unmittelbaren Nähe zur israelischen Botschaft eingefunden. Um punkt 13 Uhr outeten sich die DemonstrantInnen und strömten mit Bannern und Fahnen auf die Straße vor der israelischen Botschaft und skandierten "Free Gaza!" und "Boykott Israel!"

Dazu erklärt Ute Lampe, eine Sprecherin der Deutschen Delegation: "Dieser Protest war ein bedeutendes abschließendes Zeichen gegen Israel, das die völkerrechtswidrige Blockade des Gazas-Steifens zu verantworten hat und durchführt."

Die Polizei war sichtlich überrascht von dieser Demonstration. Anders als am Vortag vergingen mindestens 15 Minuten bis die Polizeikräfte eintrafen und alle DemonstrantInnen auf den Gehweg gedrängt hatten. Es gab keine größeren Konflikte mit der Polizei, obwohl dieser Protest ebenso illegal war, wie alle Proteste der letzten Tage. Viele der Polizisten und PassantInnen zeigten Sympathien mit dem Anliegen der Demonstranten, was vielleicht auch ein Grund für die relative Zurückhaltung der Behörden war.

Trotzdem wurde, wie in den letzten Tagen immer, die Presse bei der Berichterstattung behindert.
